Care Quality Commission Inspection

The CQC will inspect all providers within the first two years. CODE has been informed that NHS practices will not be inspected early on as the CQC is relying on the fact that PCTs have been inspecting them for compliance. The CQC is presuming that an NHS practice is compliant unless the PCT has concerns about it. In this case it will be inspected soon after registration. Private practices will be inspected within the first three months or so, as they have not been under the PCT system.
Care Quality Commission Inspection

When an inspectors looks for evidence of compliance, they use the Judgement Framework as a guide to decide whether a provider is meeting standards and also to establish the seriousness of any non-compliance. There is another document called Setting the Bar which is used by the CQC to decide how important a 'concern' is and what actions should be taken.

There is a new Judgement Framework for dentistry being released soon, CODE will modify Clinical Governance Made Simple CGMS) if necessary once the new Framework has been seen.

The CQC has said that is it not prescriptive about what constitutes evidence of compliance, but they are likely to ask for procedures, risk assessments, audits, contracts and policies, as well as evidence of training. All these can be found in the CODE modules.

Importantly there is a CODE document that shows how the CODE modules are used as evidence for the CQC inspectors. It is called Care Quality Commission Registration (G 106A). Members can download it from the members' section and non-members can download an abbreviated version here.

Preparing for inspections
Before inspection you will need to make sure that all of your compliance is up to date and also that your staff are trained. CODE Assure members will have pre-inspection health-check to see if any areas need to be improved before the inspection. Plus it is important that staff members are briefed in how to answer questions to CQC inspectors. Your CODE Assure consultant can provide this training.

Clinical Governance Made Simple (CGMS) has the solution
